Astea in partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) has designed Sophie 2.0 and done all development. Sophie is an advanced open source electronic tool for authoring, collaborating, reading, and publishing rich media documents for networked environments. The tool is based on Sophie 1.0, the brainchild of well-known multimedia pioneer Bob Stein, and HotAsTea, an electronic publishing tool developed by Astea. Sophie 2.0 was developed in Java and runs on the Linux, Macintosh, and Windows operating systems. Astea continues to develop and enhance Sophie.


Zinio Reader is a rich content delivery application serving the users of zinio.com. Zino Reader allows browsing through high quality online versions of popular magazine titles. Combined with a real life reading experience, the rich feature set of the Reader offers full text searching, sharing, fast preview and other interactive capabilities. Astea develops additional tools related to e-content delivery, such as MyLibrary – a personal digital library manager for Zinio users.

Sophie 1.0
Astea joined the Sophie 1.0 project by developing Sophie Server. Sophie Server for Sophie 1.0 was a Smalltalk based sharing and collaboration Web Service for the users of Sophie 1.0. This version of Sophie Server allowed users to upload and share books and also ngage in real time collaboration with readers and other users working on a book. Astea was involved in developing RTF import and other features of Sophie 1.0 as well.
